SCTTA Development Officer Report: 7th February 2010

Participation

  • Draft Sussex Participation Strategy - no feedback (indicating a probable lack of interest) from TT community. Suggestion of a Sussex TT Olympic Legacy Project may be the brand to bridge progress under - see attached. A number of sports development partners positive to the idea.
  • Sussex Community Circuit - gone well so far with events at Pavilion (Oct), East Grinstead (Nov), Haywards Heath (Dec) and Burgess Hill (Jan). About 140 kids involved. Further events planned at Chichester (Feb) and Crawley [K2] (April)
  • Alliance run first ranking event at Burgess Hill in Jan - went well despite some lighting problems. Rory Scott planning further 2-stars in April and June. K2 event in April also expected to have a graded strand
  • K2 event may also integrate local league anniversary celebrations, exhibition, disability and 50+ elements
  • STTA and SCTTA websites being kept reasonably up to date but few submissions from other sources
  • A number of East and West Sussex teams attended the regional zone finals of the national schools team champs at Ernst Bevin School in London. West Sussex represented for first time in years
  • West and East Sussex Schools individual championships also run recently
  • Horsham TTC launched disability provision for junior U13 and youth (13+) groups - 4 on each session so far.
  • SE Regional TT Coach, Craig Bryant visited a number of Sussex clubs to provide coaching advice - incl Horsham, Pavilion, Hollingbury, Warden Park
  • Martin Jezisek started as SE regional Disability and Club Support Coach, a position managed by the ETTA
  • As yet Hollingbury TTC has not been able to recruit for its part-time coaching position
  • West Chilt TTC secured £6,000 small grant to develop its junior section. Copthorne/Maidenbower TTC has applied for a similar grant but still waiting for an answer.
  • Funding bids put in to Fit as a Fiddle scheme for the development of 50+ coaching programmes at Storrington, Southwater, Crawley and Burgess Hill. Awaiting decisions. Billingshurst programme has been sustained post-funding but looks like Henfield programme will struggle to continue.
  • Marc Burman has been engaged as a coach by St Michael's TTC in Lewes and has made good progress by all accounts
  • Brighton City TTC has lined up a number of people to get qualified as coaches
  • Horsham District Council set to take on 2 x govt funded Future Job positions for 18-24 year olds in Feb - hopefully will be able to further support certain county-related TT operations (eg Sussex Community Circuit)
  • Arun Leisure Centre development officer in SW Sussex applying for Sport Unlimited funds to launch various after-school clubs in the area. May be a spark for development expansion of Arundel and North Mundham TTCs' networks
  • Extensive work invested into building up Crawley Community TTC's school network in last 3 months but results so far mixed and generally moderate

Performance

  • Sussex Junior Squad training has been slightly haphazard due to calendar issues. Rory Scott ran last one at Horsham in January with 12 players
  • Sussex Elite Centre started at East Grinstead in January on Monday nights and in Feb half-term - coaching team of Bryant/Burman/Jezisek gelling well. Tim Holder sports science input has commenced with planned physiology, psychology, biomechanics and nutrition elements. 4 or 5 adult sparrers per session (Ford, Standing, Pound, Majithia, Wen Wei, Bonner). Good facility. Attendance levels have been good with the following players involved from Sussex and neighbouring counties: Lewis Gray, Yolanda King, Helshan Weerasinghe, Dan Barna, Josh Bennett, Jack Bennett, Vinal Patel, Jacob Allonby, Mike Bridger, Tejas Padalkar, Alex Forshaw, Finny Wilson, James Eaglestone, Dan Pound, Tom Windrum, Dan Lawrence. Henri Assisi, Leo Assisi, James Meyers, Joss Hole, Lois Peake, Mark Scutts, Adam Correll and a 15-year old German girl from Haywards Heath also likely to be getting involved shortly. Promising start overall. Phase 2 (up to and including Easter holidays) is about to be promoted
  • Sussex Super League to resume shortly
