2nd Team Another season that can be summed up "so near and yet so far". The first set of matches were played at the impressive venue of The Welsh Institute of Sport at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff. The team of Paul Barry, Phil Richardson, Nick Standen and Pauline Steel got the season off to a good start with a 7-3 win against newly promoted Kent 3 and a 6-4 win against a Glamorgan team which included Regina Grech (nee Donovan), probably the strongest lady in the division. 13th December saw two further matches at the Graham Spicer Institute, New Malden. The men remained the same but Paulette Clarke stepped in for Pauline Steel. The day started well with a convincing 9-1 defeat of Wiltshire 2, who played without a lady. The afternoon saw a real see saw tussle with Hampshire which eventually ended in a 5-5 draw, long after all the other matches had finished. The point was dropped in the final match with Nick and Paulette going down deuce in the fifth in the final mixed doubles. The crunch matches for the season were played at Trowbridge on 28th February. Pauline Steel stepped back into the side with Gary Bonner replacing the unavailable Phil Richardson. The division was turning into a two horse race for the top promotion spot with Avon who were on maximum points and Sussex one point behind. Sussex 2nds started with a tough first match against Hereford and trailed at one stage by 4-3 in a must win match. Gary and Paul completed singles win before Nick and Pauline sealed a victory in the last mixed for a narrow 6-4 win. Meanwhile on the other table, Avon lost a close match with Hampshire by 6-4 to put Sussex on top of the table. The afternoon match was likely to be the season decider against a strong Avon team. A draw was enough for Sussex provided they could win their final match of the season against Surrey 2. The match was tight but Sussex went down in most of the close matches leaving Avon 5-2 and on the verge of victory. However singles wins for Gary and Paul left it all on the last mixed. Despite a valiant effort from Nick and Pauline they went down in a close five setter to give Avon the title. The final match of the season against Surrey 2 saw the return of Phil Richardson and Johnny Clarke came in at No. 1 for the unavailable Paul Barry. The match finished 7-3 in Sussex's favour against a quite strong Surrey team to leave Sussex 2 comfortably second and one point behind Avon. Johnny Clarke had a good day wining both singles and the mixed all three straight. Paul Barry finished the season unbeaten in the singles (10 out of 10) and was also unbeaten with Phil Richardson in doubles. Phil finished with 60% (6 out of 10), Nick with 57% (8 out of 14), Johnny 100% (2 out of 2) and Gary 50% (2 out of 4). Pauline Steel finished on 40% (2 out of 5) and Paulette lost her one singles. Strangely the doubles combinations were strong during the season but in the crunch match against Avon the four wins all came in the men's singles. Second place again for the second team. Generally a good season but disappointing to be edged out on the promotion spot.

21/3 The crunch match will be the match against Avon, although Hereford and Surrey could cause some problems, pending personnel. Avon has to play Hampshire in its other remaining match. 3rd Team Please see below the results table for the matches we played this year. I would like to thank everyone who played this year and to congratulate all of you on winning division 3D. The team has proved to be very strong and will certainly give a good account in the higher division next year. Praise must go to Christine and Barry on a fantastic performances. I am not sure of the format for next year I will make a point of attending the veterans meeting and I am sure Tony will update us with the relevant points. Once again thanks for your support I have really enjoyed the matches we have played together. I would also personally like to thank Alex who played last Saturday as a last minute call up. John Hook
4th Team A season where we have missed out on winning the division for one poor result. We started quite well with a trip to Yeovil. Our team was Andy Meads, Tony Catt, Martin Kellaway and Christine Wicks. We beat Dorset 2 by 6-4 and Berkshire 6 10-0. Our next trip was to Hereford with a team of Gary Bonner, Tony Catt, John Millward and Christine Wicks. We beat Berkshire 3 by 7-3 and Hereford 2 by 8-2. We then had a single match on the Isle of Wight. Our team was Gary Bonner, Steve Barby, Martin Kellaway and Christine Wicks. We lost 9-1, but the match was far closer than that. 19 games were decided 11-9 or deuce and we won 4 of them! Our final matches were in Reading. Our team was Gary Bonner, Tony Catt, Martin Kellaway and Dolly Gilbert. We beat Somerset 2 by 7-3 and Wiltshire 4 by 6-4. We eventually lost the division on games difference.
